5/23/13 - Rachel Maddow closed out her Wednesday night show this week by taking on a familiar target: conspiracy theorist and founder of InfoWars Alex Jones. Maddow began by reviewing how some of his more "out there" theories have started to penetrate the halls of Congress before moving on to the latest tragedy he has attempted to exploit: the Oklahoma tornado.

Maddow pointed out that Jones' campaign to stoke fear about the government buying up too many bullets led directly to a bill proposal from Republicans in the House and Senate that would limit the amount of ammunition the Department of Homeland Security could obtain. She called the idea that we should be concerned about bullets when the federal government has armed tanks and drones is "so crazy, so out-there, that even the National Rifle Association wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot rifle."

Pointing to Jones' attempts to prove that everything from the Newtown shooting to the Boston bombing to 9/11 were staged by the government, Maddow said the InfoWars world sees conspiracy in "every tragedy." So is it really that much of a surprise that they now conspiracy in the Oklahoma tornado?

Maddow played a clip of Jones saying of Monday's tornado, "I don't know if this was a weather weapon or not," suggesting that the government has the ability "create and steer groups of tornadoes."

"Alex Jones should be disqualified from participating in Republican Party politics," Maddow said. "He crack pot theories shouldn't prompt hearings in Congress and inspire actual legislation." She urged Republicans to stop taking Jones seriously and stop appearing on his radio show. "Can we agree that it's over now, Republicans?"

The comment came during a Senate hearing revisiting the Authorization for Use of Military Force, or AUMF, enacted by Congress days after the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. At the hearing, Pentagon officials claimed the AUMF gives the president power to wage endless war anywhere in the world, including in Syria, Yemen and the Congo. "This is the most astounding and most astoundingly disturbing hearing that I've been to since I've been here," said Independent Sen. Angus King of Maine. "You guys have essentially rewritten the Constitution here today." Benjamin began shouting just after Obama began remarks on the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The president repeatedly asked Benjamin if he could finish his remarks, at one point pausing to let her finish yelling. "I'm willing to cut that young lady interrupting me some slack, because it's worth being passionate about," Obama said. He even went off script to address the heckler. "The voice of that woman is worth paying attention to," Obama said.



During President Obama's counterterrorism policy speech at National Defense University on Thursday afternoon, Code Pink co-founder Medea Benjamin interrupted when the topic turned to the closing of the military detention facility at Guantanamo Bay.

"I'm about to address it, ma'am," Obama said as Benjamin went off about the hunger strike currently taking hold amongst Gitmo detainees. "Why don't you sit down? But you've got to let me speak."

"You are commander-in-chief! You can close Gitmo today!" she continued, despite Obama's repeated protests that he intended to address those issues himself.

"You should let me finish my sentence," he said before explaining his desire for Congress to make it easier to transfer detainees out of the camp, allowing him to fulfill his promise to close Gitmo. "I am confident this legacy problem can be solved, consistent with the rule of law."

Obama also added that he is willing to cut the heckler "some slack" because "it's worth passionate about" the indefinite detention of the prisoners without formal charges.

Several minutes later, Benjamin interrupted once more, decrying the administration's killing of 16-year-old American citizen Abdulrahman al-Awlaki with a drone strike. Instead of protesting her interruption, Obama paused his speech and allowed her to rant while security attempted to remove her from the back of the room.

Solar radiation storm knocks out main US weather satelitte

(USA Today) -- One of the primary weather satellites meteorologists use to forecast weather over the eastern USA and the tropical Atlantic Ocean failed late Tuesday, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.

A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) geostationary satellite, known as "GOES-13," experienced trouble with its imaging equipment, he reports. "GOES" stands for Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite.

This is "not good on the verge of hurricane season," says J. Marshall Shepherd, a research meteorologist at the University of Georgia. Hurricane season starts on June 1.

NOAA is reactivating another satellite, GOES-14, just as the agency did last year when GOES-13 experienced a problem, Sosnowski says. Officials expect the new satellite to be ready early Thursday. If the backup fails, however, options are greatly reduced.

Geostationary satellites are in orbit 22,238 miles above the equator, which means they orbit at the same speed as the Earth's rotation, keeping them above the same spot on Earth.

NOAA reports that GOES satellites constantly monitor severe thunderstorms, flooding rainfall and hurricanes. They "are key instruments for meteorologists to provide watches and warnings for these dangerous weather phenomena," Sosnowski notes.

The "geostationary" satellites are different from the "polar-orbiting" satellites that provide much of the data for the computer models forecasters use to predict weather. Some of the polar-orbiting satellites could deteriorate or fail in the coming years, before new ones are able to be launched. This could leave a gap in the weather data that forecasters use.

Woolwich Suspects 'Known To Security Services'

Police search houses in Greenwich and Lincolnshire as it emerges the two suspects were not considered an immediate threat by MI5.
The two terror suspects being held under armed guard at hospitals in London were both known to security services, Government sources say.

The men - who were apparently assessed by MI5 as not posing a threat requiring "immediate intervention" - were arrested following the hacking to death of a serving soldier in the street in Woolwich, southeast London.

Sky's crime correspondent Martin Brunt said one suspect had been identified as Michael Adeboloja, a 28-year-old Londoner of Nigerian descent.

Police investigating the attack have been searching an address in Greenwich and another in Lincolnshire, believed to be connected to Adeboloja.

Brunt added: "We believe it is his father's house that is being searched by Lincolnshire Police on behalf of counter-terrorism command at Scotland Yard."

Relatives of the dead soldier are believed to have been informed and his identity is expected to be released later today. A post mortem is being carried out on the body.

Counter-terrorism officers are leading the investigation into the "shocking and horrific" murder and the Prime Minister has held talks with his top advisers to address potential security implications.

Two suspected Muslim fanatics attacked the man in the street a short distance from the Royal Artillery Barracks after apparently knocking him down with their car.

Witnesses said they set about the soldier with a number of weapons, which appeared to include knives and a meat cleaver, while shouting the name of "Allah".
